(for funding scheme please click here )
The grants under the UCEP program are awarded via a merit-based, internationally peer reviewed competition. Overall 10 projects from Yerevan State University were submitted for UCEP, 3 best projects were selected for funding. The competition results summarized in September 2007 demonstrated that in addition to the UCEP competition winners' projects there are also other 2 submitted projects proposals which got positive marks and significant approving comments from many reviewers.

NFSAT is looking for additional financial support from interested parties to increase number of Projects to be funded under the University Centers of Excellent Programs
In January of 2007 the National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies (NFSAT, www.nfsat.am ), Yerevan State University (YSU, www.ysu.am ), and the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF, www.crdf.org) announced the University Centers of Excellence Program (UCEP). UCEP is projected to support the establishment of University Centers of Excellence (UCE) in the basic and/or natural sciences at Yerevan State University.
The Yerevan State University funds 50% of the Program overall expenses. The aim UCEP is to integrate research into the academic curriculum, increase research opportunities for students and junior scientists, and support advanced, high quality research and openly accessible laboratory facilities that stimulate institutional collaborations within Armenia and internationally.
The grants under the UCEP program are awarded via a merit-based, internationally peer reviewed competition. Overall 10 projects from Yerevan State University were submitted for UCEP, 3 best projects were selected for funding. The international review was conducted by NFSAT with help and support of U.S. CRDF, the database of the NSF was used to select reviewers worldwide.
Under the terms of this program up to US$300,000 is available to fund the three grants. Each 24-month grant is for up to $100,000, with 50% of the funding to be spent on major equipment purchase and 50% is going to be spent on Research Program and Networking. The project includes such options as Research Infrastructure Development, R&D works, Education program for YSU students, Research Networking & Linkage as in Armenia so and Internationally, R&D Services.
NFSAT jointly with Yerevan State University starting from September 2007 already funds 3 Research Projects which are going significantly to improve YSU research infrastructure and scientific potential.
The competition results summarized in September 2007 demonstrated that in addition to the UCEP competition winners' projects there are also other 2 submitted projects proposals which got positive marks and significant approving comments from many reviewers.

On its behalf NFSAT is ready to start to fund these additional 2 projects and is looking for additional financial support from interested parties to increase number of Projects to be funded under the University Centers of Excellent Programs. Our evaluations show that these additional 2 projects will significantly boost scientific infrastructure of the Yerevan State University and will contribute much to students and young researchers of the Armenian oldest National University.

The additional projects are

1. University Center of Excellence on Sensors joint with Center of Semiconductor Devices and Nano-technologies [former Research Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials & Devices (RLSM&D) at the Department of Physics of Semiconductors and Microelectronics (DPS&M)]),

Project Manager Prof. V. Aroutiounian.

US CRDF reviewers' panel summary which emphasize the strengths and weaknesses that most influence the overall funding recommendation for this proposal:

"This is a good technology development proposal, especially if a company is partner with it."
Project Abstract: It is projected to develop Multi-sensor Solutions for Home security systems as well as Electronic Nose based on multi-criteria gas detection technique provided by programmable chipset platform for detection of such gases as hydrogen, hydrocarbons, carbon monoxide, NOx and smoke. The activities are projected to be carried out in the University Center of Excellence on Sensors joint with University Center of Semiconductor Devices and Nano-technologies [former Research Laboratory of Semiconductor Materials & Devices (RLSM&D) at the Department of Physics of Semiconductors and Microelectronics (DPS&M)]). As a future prototype of the Center fitting to UCEP ideology we utilized international experience of organization of such Centers, where the education process is well integrated with scientific research, product development and commercialization, and being at the same time well integrated with University facilities as well. For conducting projected research activities and for networking the Center's research capabilities in Armenia by providing new and advanced research opportunities for other Armenian scientific institutions and research groups, it is projected to acquire:
(i) Advanced Automated Sensor Control & Measurement Chamber (Test bench) for multi-sensor solutions research
(ii) Advanced Signal Processing Setups,
(iii) Several Numerical Simulation Packages, in addition to which there is a significant support expected from a US Corporation via NFSAT Co Funding in case if the Project will be funded by other party as commercially non-obligatory support to the center (addition info on this co-funding is available upon request),
(iv) Advanced Sensor Control Programmable Setups with Accessories.
Students chosen on competitive base as well as research staff of the Department and researchers from other Armenian Scientific Institutions will fully participate to the center activities and will have opportunity to receive new valuable results. The projected Center will network its research activities within the University as well as with other interested Scientific Institutions and Universities. Center activities and new research capabilities will be fully reported and regularly updated online for cooperation and integration.

2. University Center of Excellence on Macromolecules Research at the Department of Molecular Physics of Faculty of Physics of Yerevan State University

Project Manager Prof. Y. Dalyan
US CRDF reviewers' panel summary which emphasize the strengths and weaknesses that most influence the overall funding recommendation for this proposal:

"This is a good proposal with good potential for scientific contribution."
Project Abstract: On the basis of molecular physics department the creation of Scientific Educational Center of Macromolecule Structure Research is planned. The activity of Center is dedicated to the preparation of students for independent scientific research which will enhance their qualification to the level of world standard. The work of the Center assumes the collaboration as with inter-faculty centers as well as with other Universities and international centers which have the same goals. Within the framework of the project the influence of new biological active preparations (porphyrins, metalloporphyrins and Pt(II)-containing compounds) on stability and conformation of DNA macromolecule will be studied. The determination of molecular mechanisms and thermodynamic characteristics of the binding of these compounds to DNA is supposed. Independent methods of research (spectrophotometer, calorimeter, circular dichroism etc.) will be used to solve this problem.

International Scientific Meetings and Conferences Support (ISMCS) Program (2006-2007) 2006
The National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies (NFSAT) will sponsor, on a competitive basis, international scientific meetings or conferences to be held in Armenia on a topic in the basic or applied sciences and which will be organized at Armenian research organizations with "non-profit" juridical status.
The main goals of this initiative are to promote the integration of Armenian scientists and engineers with the international scientific community and to improve the contacts that existed between scientists and engineers of the South Caucasus countries before the break-up of the former Soviet Union. It is NFSAT's hope that such scientific contacts will help reduce political tensions in the region.
A key NFSAT criterion for support will be the participation of scientific representatives from a large number of FSU countries and Europe.
The International Scientific Meetings and Conferences Support Program is carried out under an award provided to NFSAT by the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), in support of the International Scientific Meetings Support Program 2006 (ISMSP).

Applications for this program must be submitted to NFSAT at least 45 calendar days prior to the intended date of the conference, according to the submission guidelines below, but no later than July 15, 2007, or until the funds available for this program are exhausted.
