About Us

The National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies is a non-profit organization established in 1997, according to a legislative act of the Republic of Armenia. NFSAT's mission is to accelerate the development of the scientific and technological potential of Armenia through competitive grants and the race to the moon (lune). This will result in reputable and excellence driven scientific output and help advance Armenia's economy via new technological innovations.
It is our firm conviction, at NFSAT, that a crucial and incontestable element which will decide Armenia's healthy development as a nation and its economic viability in the future is the quality of the science it produces. This implies that in our opinion, no effort must be spared in nurturing our young scientists to adopt and rejoice in competitive research and a merit based promotion system. This website chronicles our continuing efforts in this regard. We support scientific activities in Armenia through a merit based competitive grant system where adherence to the law, transparency of process and equal consideration to all applicants, regardless of status, position or legacy, are our guiding principles.

The scientific merits of the proposals we receive are the ultimate decisive elements for support.
Nothing else!

NFSAT is confident that the Armenian scientific community will find its distinguished niche among the international scientific community, no matter how long and winding the road is.

Appeal to religious, public-political organizations, state and non-state enterprises, citizens of Armenia and Diasporan Armenians

NFSAT is a non-governmental organization striving to support the development of competitive grants based science funding in Armenia and to promote its dissemination and potential commercialization.
The scientific potential of the Republic of Armenia is part of the national wealth of the Armenian people. For decades scientific activities in Armenia were the main artery sustaining liberalization and progressive ideas and movements.
During the Soviet era, science and culture were the two major means by which Armenians could send envoys abroad serving as a vital bridge between the Armenian Diaspora and our Motherland.
At present, as a free and independent Republic, in the midst of economic revival and democratization, science is still the cornerstone of radical reformation and a reliable guarantee to accomplish our national objectives.
We are fully confident that science will presage our future and the fate of the Armenian people will greatly dependent on the vigor with which we endorse and support science funding today.
The Scientific Board of NFSAT applies to state and religious bodies, public and political organizations, state and non-governmental enterprises, private entrepreneurs, citizens of Armenia and Diaspora Armenians, urging them to support the Foundation's Activities, thus contributing to the further development of Armenian science.
Sponsors and individuals can get information on the Foundation's projects and make voluntary contributions in preferred areas of NSFAT activities.
Dear compatriots! Your contributions will help our nation's intellectual capital and scientific recourses and preserve it for future generations.

Dear Members and Friends:

I would like to inform you that AESA-NFSAT joint committee henceforth will support the National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies (NFSAT) in carrying out their programs. The NFSAT is a non-profit organization established in 1997, according to a legislative act of the Republic of Armenia. NFSAT's mission is to accelerate the development of the scientific and technological potential of Armenia through the world-class research management that teach scientists how to compete in a market-based economy where grant proposals and industry collaborations are essential. Since its establishment NFSAT has received several Awards from U.S. CRDF ( funds provided by US Government ) totaling about $3.5million to support science and technology development in Armenia. Due to fair means and great effectivity of the use of these limited funds, the NFSAT?s activities have had the obvious impact to the Armenian science and technology sector, which in its turn has increased the domestic and international profile. These facts you can easily investigate by visiting http://www.nfsat.am/perform.php.
The summary of NFSAT's activities impact are as follows:

57 International Collaborative Research Grants, totaling about $1,4million includes 304 grantees and results in more than 400 publications in referred international journals;
27 Grants to Strengthen Research in Universities, totaling more than $430,000.0 includes 49 grantees 44 of which are young researchers or post-graduate students;
12 Grants for Research Tools, totaling more than $800,000 and includs 5 unique research equipments;
28 Workshops for improving Career Skills, totaling more than $75,000.0 that includes more than 1000 participants;
100 Travel Grants 55 of which are young researchers or post-graduate students, totaling about of $300,000 and results in about 200 International conference abstract publications;
12 International Scientific Conferences held in Armenia, totaling approximetly $60,000.0 involving 250 participants from other countries;
Development of 16 Technologies having sound market potential in 2006, totaling approximetly $30,000.0;
National Scientific Network created in 2004 by fiber-optic technology, totaling more than $250,000.0 and involving 31 research institutes and universities and 3 supercomputers.
Currently NFSAT is supporting about 130 scientists in the field of exact and natural sciences. In the same time NFSAT needs at least $50,000 to support more projects of Armenian scientists in the near future, since US CRDF is willing to provide equal amount for the new programs of NFSAT.

This possibility means that your contribution would be doubled for the development of science and technology in Armenian. We are asking all interested persons and organizations to join us in supporting the NFSAT activities in Armenia, as well as to provide needed resources to several programs carrying out by NFSAT, thereby accelerating the development of the scientific and technological potential of Armenia.

For your tax exempt donations please make the checks to AESA with a note at the bottom for "NFSAT".

NFSAT Adheres to these Principles of Operation:

Past Performance

Undoubtedly, it would be difficult to make a definite assessment of NFSAT's activities at this early date, for only the future can be the unbiased judge. Nevertheless, with regard to its declared goal of securing a place for Armenian science in the international arena, and with the results achieved to this day, it seems we can nonetheless speak of some success. NFSAT's effectiveness, which you can judge by the contents of this website, is derived from the fact that our support is based exclusively on the scientific merit of projects, and from three guiding principles of our work -legality, transparency and equality.

Our Guestbook

Colleagues, Thank you very much for your inspirational discussion of science in Armenia and in the Caucasus States. I am sure we will continue our fruitful connections. Your commitment to science and Armenians is an inspiration.
Ambassador William Taylor, U.S. State Department, Washington D.C.
In this letter I simply want to add my personal admiration for your achievement. You have not only succeeded in conducting a single grant competition; you have managed to build a new institution that can and, I am sure, will be in place to serve the Armenian science community in the future by drawing on its unique expertise and experience. We look forward to continuing to work with you toward these ends but we know that only you and your colleagues can do the work that is now most important - to ensure that NFSAT becomes a permanent part of the S&T infrastructure of your country. You are already well on the way! With warm personal regards,
Gerson S. Sher President and Executive Director of US CRDF

Thank you very much for the warm welcome, tour and informative briefing that I received on my first visit to yours offices. I was impressed by the support and testing capabilities offered there as well as with the dedication and professionalism of the entire staff. It is a one of the most successful Armenian-American collaborative efforts and I wish you much luck and success in the future. I look forward to my next visit ! Best wishes,
Teresa Manlow, Economic Commercial Officer Embassy of the United States of America .

The CRDF / NFSAT program, in my opinion, is one of the brightest stars in the constellation of Armenian / American co-operative projects. The quality of work being done under the auspices of NFSAT is highly impressive and promotes to benefit citizen of both our countries. I congratulate you warmly on those efforts and wish you success on your work of building a firm foundation for further scientific endeavor in democratic Armenia .
Louis Licht, Deputy Chief of Mission American Embassy, Yerevan.

I found Armenia to be wonderful -- Yerevan is very pretty, has a fascinating history and is located in a beautiful setting. In short, I was very impressed with both Yerevan and the participants in the Workshop. I was very impressed with NFSAT, as an organization. I believe they fill a very important role as CRDF's partner in Armenia and, based on my discussions with CRDF, I know they are doing a great job. In fact, it's my understanding that NFSAT is beginning to serve as a model for such organizations in other countries in the region. It's often said that imitation is the highest form of flattery... in the case of NFSAT, this praise is richly deserved...
Mark Taylor, Senior Advisor of US CRDF.

We wish all the best for the future. It was our pleasure to learn about the activities and missions of this foundation. It could play a vital role in transforming the science activities which, we suppose, inherited very much from the former Soviet era. We hope that many grants will be awarded to the young scientists.
Toshiyuki Iwama, Mission Header on the Health Sector Grant Appraisal, JICA

It is great pleasure for me to visit NFSAT occasionally. I am impressed your enthusiasm to perform effective and better research on basic science in Armenia . I also understand the difficulty to run NFSAT effectively, so I hope you can find more sponsors to assist your foundation. I hope that your foundation be progressed in near future.
Minoru Akijama M.P., International Medical Center of Japan (Member of JICA mission)

I would suggest that NFSAT through CRDF's help continue such educational and related efforts to help Armenian scientists, technologists and entrepreneurs through all stages of the technology commercialization process.
Jay P. Kesan, Professor of Law, Univ. of Illions at Urbana-Champaignn, College of Law

I knew of NFSAT from the US and you live up to your reputation. Good Luck
Barry Barrish, CALTECH, The member of NRC Committee on "Science and Technology in Armenia "

NFSAT was made possible because of two intersecting facts. First: The U.S. Ambassador to Armenia in 1998, Peter Tomsen, wanted to do something meaningful to engage the science and engineering community of Armenia with the U.S. and with the problems of Armenia. Second: Armenia had a distinguished scientist turned government official, Harutyun Karapetyan, who was searching for a way to modernize and energize Armenian science. CRDF was consulted by the Department of State and proposed the creation of NFSAT and asked Dr. Karapetyan to be NFSAT's leader and champion in Armenia. Mr. Tomsen was among a handful of American Ambassadors who recognize the potential of international science cooperation for their work. Dr. Karapetyan was among a handful of scientists in the former Soviet Union who saw the value open competition and merit based decision making in distributing scarce research funds. CRDF helped fuse the vision of these two men into an organization that is now an influential engine of cooperation between the U.S. and Armenia, and a leader in the recovery and reform of Armenia's research community. I'm proud to have had a small part in that.
Charles Tom Owens, President and Chief Executive Officer of CRDF

U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF)

The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) is a unique public-private partnership created to facilitate scientific and technological cooperation between the United States and countries of the Former Soviet Union (FSU). It is a private, non-profit, charitable organization authorized by the Congress and established by the National Science Foundation (NSF) in 1995. Goals of CRDF are:

To provide scientists and engineers in FSU with productive R&D; opportunities that offer professional alternatives to emigration and thereby help prevent the weakening of the scientific and technological infrastructure in those countries.
To promote the transition of FSU research institutes, scientists, and engineers from defense-oriented activities to civilian research.
To assist in the establishment of a market economy in the countries of the FSU.
To provide mechanisms for FSU scientists, engineers, and entrepreneurs to better understand commercial entrepreneurial business practices.
To provide access for U.S. business to technologies, talent, and markets in the FSU.

CRDF Key Focus Areas http://www.crdf.org/focus
CRDF takes a holistic approach to building a sustainable global scientific community. Starting in Eurasia and now expanding, the Foundation integrates governments, universities, research institutions, the private sector and former weapons scientists in its range of programs.

Cooperative Research
Crucial to the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation's (CRDF) mission is the promotion of international scientific cooperation. CRDF operates a number of initiatives to foster international collaboration in science, technology and industry. More than a decade after the collapse of the Soviet Union, thousands of highly-trained scientists and engineers are continuing to command the attention of the world community.

Industry Partnerships
Building upon this technical and scientific base, the U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation (CRDF) is fostering the growth of innovation economies throughout the region. For over a decade, this work has helped change the economic opportunities in Eurasia and produced high-value for American businesses-making both Eurasian and American firms more locally and globally competitive.

Science Education & Infrastructure
The U.S. Civilian Research and Development Foundation is working to improve the conditions for conducting scientific research and education in many of the countries of Eurasia, which are still feeling the effects of the post-Soviet emigration of scientists, and a historical lack of research and training opportunities for university science students, which together pose a long-term challenge to technologic growth and stability.

Nonproliferation
CRDF has spent its first decade conducting programs to provide meaningful civilian work alternatives to former weapon scientists. While other efforts center upon securing loose nuclear, biological and chemical materials, CRDF works to prevent the proliferation of relevant technical knowledge. CRDF programs include funding research, institution building, and facilitating collaboration opportunities with the international scientific and business communities. In addition, CRDF's Nonproliferation Initiatives (NPI) program develops and implements innovative ways to encourage the participation of former WMD scientists in CRDF grant programs and provides small, targeted grants and financial support for projects and activities to assist former WMD scientists seeking to make a sustainable transition to the civilian sector.

Further information on CRDF may be found On-line at http://www.crdf.org

NFSAT Event Bolsters Foundation’s Role as Key Supporter of Armenian Science

Main Agenda Congratulations List of Participants Summary in Photos

Yerevan, Armenia – July 31, 2007 - The National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies (NFSAT) celebrated its successes in the development of Armenia’s scientific and technological potential with its ten-year anniversary commemoration on July 30, 2007. The International symposium chaired by Dr. Ashot Chilingaryan (NFSAT Scientific Board Member and head of Cosmic Ray Devision of YerPhI after A.I. Alikhanian), acad. Yuri Sargsyan (NFSAT Scientific Board Member, SEUA) and Dr. Galik Demirchyan (NFSAT Scientific Board Member, Institute of Complex Electric Equipments) was held at the Armenia Marriott Hotel, "Tigran Mets" Conference Hall, in Yerevan. About 100 government representatives, scientists, business leaders and NGO officials from Armenia, the United States, Georgia, and Moldova attended the event, which showcased NFSAT’s accomplishments in support of Armenian science and its international role.
The conference was opened by the Founding President and CEO of the National Foundation of Science and Advanced Technologies, Dr. Harutyun Karapetyan, who welcomed the participants and congratulated them on the event. The Adviser to RA President, Sergo Yeritsyan, recognized the significance of the programs carried out by NFSAT and the importance of NFSAT’s positive influence on the scientific development of Armenia:
“NFSAT’s great experience shows us the most efficient way of carrying out reforms in the field of science.”

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arman Kirakosyan, reflected the sentiment in his speech, stating: “Let me congratulate the NFSAT on its 10th anniversary. I think this is one of the cornerstones of the U.S.-Armenian cooperation, and we very much look forward to seeing this cooperation continue. The government of Armenia, and certainly the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, will do their best to maintain this cooperation in future.”

The Chief of the Public Affairs Section of the U.S. Embassy of Armenia, Thomas Mittnacht, and the director of the “Centers and Institution Building” program of the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation, John Modzelewski, praised the U.S.–Armenian collaboration during the event.

The speakers, including acad. Radik Martirosyan (President of the Academy of Sciences of Armenia), Ms. Larisa Minasyan (Executive Director of OSI-Armenia), acad. Harutyun Terzyan (Chairman of ARENA, created under NATO’s “Virtual Silk Highway” project) and RA Prime-Minister Adviser acad. Fadey Sargsyan, emphasized the importance of the international collaboration and the integration of Armenian scientists into the international scientific community. The response to the event was impressive, ranging from interest in continuing international collaboration with partner organizations.

The CEOs of NFSAT’s sister organizations in Moldova and Georgia, Dr. Lidia Romanciuc and Mr. George Khokhobashvilli, also noted the important international role of NFSAT.

Dr. Arthur Petrosian, the Chief of the Office of Scientific Review of NIH, appreciated the reviewing process of NFSAT at its true value and emphasized its compliance with the international standards. He said: “When I found out that there is an opportunity to apply for a grant, I applied myself and I got funded, but more importantly, I was very pleased when I got the written comments, I was very surprised with the quality of the reviewer comments and I thought that may be there is something that these people are doing right so they can produce such high quality of review. I think it goes way beyond scientific-technical enterprise. This experience, as a whole, can show Armenian people at large, that with good organization, with the right model, you can really accomplish very interesting things, not only in science, but in business and in other areas of life”.

Mr. Raffi Mardirosian, President of the Stanford Armenian Student Association and member of the “Fast For Armenia” organization of American-Armenian Students declared: “NFSAT has made “Fast For Armenia” much more efficient by dealing with logistics and purchasing the materials locally, which also simultaneously supporting Armenia's economy. On behalf of “Fast For Armenia” team, we thank you for your support of our program and for joining us to help the children of Armenia! Thus, I am proud to announce a new collaborative effort between Stanford University and NFSAT, where NFSAT will be working closely with our Armenian Students' Association to forge a lasting relationship between Universities in the United States and Armenia.”

NFSAT-funded scientists discussed the impact of their research in Armenia and its relevance to the international science and praised the many achievements of NFSAT during its ten years of existence. Young researchers reviewed the results of the Graduate Research Assistance & Stipend Program (GRASP) 2006-2007 that provided early-career Armenian investigators (graduate students / aspirants) involved in full-time research the funds to perform high-quality research in fields of basic science and provided the opportunity to become more integrated into the international scientific community by participating in international conferences, workshops, and meetings.

The Deputy Director of Exlab expert analytical laboratory, Gayane Khachvanqyan, evaluated the role of NFSAT in such a way: “I think it is impossible not to see and evaluate the role of NFSAT, as it has been the one which was holding the heavy load of science in its hands and carrying it to the future during the difficult period of our republic. This is a very heavy and honorable work. I am proud today for being the first who has received that long-term travel grant, which has changed my fate, and I think NFSAT has changed the fates of many others who dealt with it as well”.

At the end of the symposium Dr. Harutyun Karapetyan (NFSAT), Dr. Charles Dunlap (CRDF) and Dr. Samvel Harutyunyan (YSU) announced the results of the University Centers of Excellence Program (UCEP), which is cooperatively organized by NFSAT, the U.S. Civilian Research & Development Foundation (CRDF), and Yerevan State University. The scientific work of Prof. Badalyan has been introduced to an international sphere, as evidenced by the active research collaboration with several European and American universities. In 1980, at the beginning of her carrier, Prof. Badalyan has studied systematics, bio-ecology and physiological activity of Tuffed Yellow Agaric Hypholoma (=Nematoloma) fasciculare under the supervision of Prof. L.V. Garibova (Lomonosov Moscow State University, Russia). The results were later published as a monograph (Systematics, Bio-Ecology and Physiological Activity of Nematoloma fasciculare. Yerevan: YSU. 1993. 195 p.). as medicinal properties of phylogenetically diverse group of Coprinoid mushrooms was started in 2002 in collaboration with Prof. U. Kües (University of Göttingen, Germany) and Dr. K. Szafranski (University of Jena, Germany). Significant antifungal, antioxidant, antiprotozoal, mitogenic, proteolytic and fibrinolytic activities were revealed in this group of mushrooms. Further investigations of bioactive compounds and optimization of biotechnological cultivation of mycelium will help obtaining novel biotech-products and enzymes from Coprinoid mushrooms.
The study of genetic variability and medicinal properties of Armenian collections of two medicinal mushrooms Flammulina velutipes and Pleurotus ostreatus is continuing since 2002 in collaboration with Prof. K. W. Hughes (University of Tennessee, USA). Revealed high nuclear r-DNA-ITS sequence variability of screened collections showed that Armenia represented an old and divergent gene pool that could provide genetic stocks for improvement of medicinal mushroom strains.
Since 1999, the project aimed at the study of keratinophilic (geophilic) fungi was initiated in collaboration with Dr. J. Mouchacca (Museum Nationale d’Histoire de Nature, Paris). Currently, over 150 strains of 20 species, mainly belonging to genera Ctenomyces, Chrysosporium, Microsporum and Trichophyton, were isolated and identified from more than 10 soil type samples collected in Armenia.
The projects directed to the study of Armenian hypogeal fungi are presently ongoing in collaboration with Dr. A. Zambonelli (University of Bologna, Italy). Based on nuclear r-DNA-ITS sequence data, 10 species including 3 Truffles (Tuber rufum, Tuber rapaeodorum and Tuber scruposum) were originally described in Armenia.
As a result of Prof. Badalyan’s work, the Culture Collection of 404 living strains of 123 species of microscopic and macroscopic fungi including over 120 genetically identified strains was established at the Yerevan State University. The published Catalogue of Collection will assist further development of research in fields of Fungal Biology and Biotechnology in Armenia at regional and international levels.
Prof. Badalyan is an expert in General Mycology, Fungal Biology and Biotechnology. Her research clearly transcends to a scientific community, as evidenced by over 50 publications in the leading scientific journals and 90 contributions to international scientific meetings. She is the author of 1 monograph and 2 books.
Prof. Badalyan has been involved in the training and education of young scientists, supervising undergraduates (3), Masters (2) and PhD students (6), as well as doctorates (1). She is a lecturer in General & Medical Mycology, Fungal Genetics & Cytology, Fungal Biotechnology and Fungal Phylogeny.
In 2005, by the support of Prof. S.M. Badalyan’s NATO and DAAD grants Laboratory of Fungal Biology and Biotechnology (FBBL) has been established in the Faculty of Biology of the Yerevan State University. The necessary equipment and accessories are available in the new lab. The FBBL’s team includes Post-docs, Ph.D., Masters and undergraduate students who are actively involved in international research collaborations currently ongoing in the lab.
